Posted By Jeff On August 11, 2008 @ 3:23 pm
Sunday morning around 4:00am a giant fire at the Sunrise Industrial Gasses propane depot broke out resulting in an explosion that could be seen for miles, the death of a firefighter and a facility employee being unaccounted for. Reports claim that over 12,000 people were evacuated from their homes surrounding Sunrise due to potential risks of toxic gases being released. Highway 401, not only a nearby highway but the busiest highway in Canada, was also closed for over 12 hours during this time. Cause of this incident has yet to be identified. George Carlin Died

George was a funny guy, I watched a lot of his stand-up. He died on Sunday at the age of 71 due to heart failure. That sucks.
“I think he’s down there now. Screaming up at us”
And I thought my parents were bad…

I don’t know if I should feel sorry for this kid or to pat his mother on the back. In short, the mother woke this boy up to go to school, he told her where to go. In most families, that’s generally where it would end. Well to take it one step further, this boy argued then went and punched a TV.
Now at this point I’m thinking “If he were my kid he wouldn’t be sitting for a week”. Well that’s good and all, but his mother called the police instead! All I can comment to hearing that is “Holy shit, you serious?!” With all the ridiculous laws that you can’t discipline your kids anymore she really didn’t have much choice.
Anyway, over analyzing this here, just read it and laugh at this kid being a dumbass:

The other day (Friday to be exact) I went to check out one of my favorite sites for keeping up to date on TV shows (since I don’t have cable) and movies,TV-Links.Co.Uk. To my dismay, I found only 404 errors. I was hoping in the bottom of my heart that it was just having technical difficulties. Well, it wasn’t so.
TV-Links was a site which linked to videos hosted around the internet (on sites such a YouTube and Stage6), almost all of which were copyrighted TV shows. This worked great for many people, they could watch all the TV for free. It also allowed those who were denied access (due to the area they lived in) to watch shows which are legally broadcast on the TV station’s websites to see it in an alternate form. However, they did not host any of the videos themselves, just linked to other sites and people who were hosting them.
On Thursday the owner of the site was taken into custody by Gloucestershire police under section 92 of the Trade Mark Act. The humorous part about this is that the site didn’t violate copyright laws. They were not hosting the files, nor did they upload them in anyway. They simply supplied a link to where they were located. Were authorities looking to point fingers it would be the users who uploaded them. The only thing they can legally do is subpoena the site’s owner to find out where the links came from, which would result in a long chain of ‘he said, she said’. Complete foolishness if you ask me.

Bloggers gain some protection

Some good news came yesterday for American bloggers, In an amended version of the “Free Flow of Information Act“, supported by the US Senate, it was decided that bloggers could potentially be covered by the “reporter’s privilege” section of the act. This would mean that bloggers are no longer required to reveal confidential source information, a right with until now has been denied to bloggers for quite some time now.
For more information on this, check out the article on Mashable HERE.
Canada: Big friendly police state?
Posted By Jeff On September 17, 2007 @ 1:08 pm
The issue has arisen lately of certain government officials probing where they shouldn’t be. As you can read in the article below, they’re attempting to make it possible for law enforcement to obtain names, addresses, phone numbers, SIM card numbers, email addresses, and IP addresses of customers from ISP without a warrant deeming it “lawful access”. Because of many ISP being loyal to their customers (unlike many of their relatives south of the border) this has proven to be a problem in the past when companies try to convict uses of illegal activity online.
Now I’m not saying that police should be completely cut out of the internet, I’m saying they should have limited access. Unless they’re keeping track of somebody with a criminal record or are suspected of doing something highly illegal with proof to back it up (I’m talking kiddie porn and bombs here, not an elderly old lady maybe-perhaps-almost downloading the latest Britney Spears song) then they shouldn’t have access to anybody’s internet information. If you want to harass some random Joe Blow, then you should have to get a warrant and get told your an idiot by the courts.
The real kicker to all this is that they weren’t planning releasing news of this to the public. Unlike their previous attempts to enforce this, only a “handpicked, secret group” were selected for the consultation about this. Very sneaking guys. Assholes. Stuff like that won’t fly, the power of the internet is stronger than your government secrets. When something as large as this starts happening you have to inform people in the masses that their information is going to be distributed. If this message doesn’t come from the government itself, it would be wise of the ISPs to let their customers know of the policy changes immediately.
I’m not doing anything illegal, but by damn if I want some overweight, donut eating, egocentric street cop having unfiltered access to my information. We can’t even trust the pigs to clean up the drug problem in high schools, I’ll be damned if I’m handing over my IP anytime soon.

US Department of Justice hates penguins

I might not be up to date on international rules and regulations, but isn’t this kind of treatment prohibited by the Geneva Conventions?
sk0t was informed by his Probation Officer that he has to have special software installed on his PC so that the government can monitor his online activities. However, what is a more bitter pill to swallow for him is that the monitoring software is Windows only and as sk0t is an Ubuntu user, the Justice Department is forcing him to switch operating systems.
I’d honestly hate to be this guy. Though the fact that he got charged for uploading Star Wars: Episode III he had it coming. Who in their right mind would want to make other people watch such a horrible movie? I might still have windows installed out of laziness (and that my burner won’t work to burn off Ubuntu), but to force somebody to use windows is just cruel. They should just castrate him and put him out to pasture instead, it will have the same effect.
But my Mom doesn't have a basement
Posted By Jeff On August 25, 2007 @ 3:50 am
Recently, a writer by the name of Ben Wallace commented to a CNN interviewer saying in regards to unfavorable comments from bloggers “I mean, they all live in their mom’s basement anyway, so what difference does that make?”, I’ve watched it a few times now and honestly find it pretty funny, though also insulting at the same time. I don’t consider myself to be a talented blogger, though I’m not exactly the worst of it either (however lately I must admit, my posts have been pretty whiny). But a comment like that shows not only disrespect to millions of people worldwide, but complete and utter ignorance of the progression of media. It is quite obvious that blogging is quickly overtaking all tradition media outlets, as is being displayed by even the largest organizations. There is a reason why these foolish older people should be Old Yeller’d.

Golden Frogs!
Posted By Jeff On August 21, 2007 @ 4:11 pm
According to a recent article, four golden colored frogs were found found in the town of Shimanto in Kochi. They appear to be black-spotted pond frogs but because of an albino mutation they’re prevented from forming pigments. You can find out more details about them in This Article. All I can say is that I want one. Or for that matter, all four.

CNN.com – Beijing clinic ministers to online addicts – Jul 1, 2005
So I woke up this morning and came downstiars to find an article labled “Internet Addicted Youths Find Peace At Treatment Facility In Beijing” (above). So the way I see it…I’m being sent to Beijing! Woo hoo! Go Internet powers! Seriously though, it’s cool. I want to know what the ‘clear liquid’ is though that they give them. Knowing the government, it’s something to play with their brains. I want some
