Dr. Horrible in 8-Bit
Posted By Jeff On April 9, 2010 @ 9:15 am
I don’t know what to say other than ‘Holy crap’ and ‘I want to play this game!’. A guy (or gal) going by the name DoctorOctoroc redid the first act of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. It’s NPH in Nintendo form, that’s totally and utterly badass! I don’t even want to get into how incredibly epic the soundtrack is. It makes me feel all warm and squishy inside. Watch it, love it, then go buy me the DVD off Amazon kthx.

Problogger: The Book (Review)
Posted By Jeff On January 5, 2009 @ 1:26 am
Recently while browsing my local Chapters book store I came across a small soft cover book, among all the ‘big bad books’ on programming, with a strangely familiar name:”ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income“.
For those of you who are unaware, Problogger is one of the leading (if not the leading) blogs about blogging tips. The site is maintained by Darren Rowse, who is likely one of the best educated people on what needs to be done to get a blog off the ground and keep it there. With he updates daily, you can bet I’ve been a subscriber to his RSS for some time.
In this book, Darren (and co-writer Chris Garrett) go through the process of explaining how to set up a blog and make it work. They do a great job of setting forth introductory steps of choosing a topic (Niche), available platforms and how to write to your audience. Some of the more in depth topics that they go into are different kinds of advertising, networking and community building.
Though short (210 pages I believe) they pack it full of tons of information in an easy to read tone. I throughly enjoyed it and recommend it anybody looking to start out blogging, or even those just looking to do it better.
Google Greatness: Smart Searching
Posted By Jeff On September 27, 2007 @ 11:09 am
Do you ever find yourself searching something and coming back with a ton of ads and having to go through page after page of search results for what you want? Chances are you can use some searching tips.
Google Blog Search: This is always a great place to start. Blogs aren’t always personal journals, simply weblogs. Most sites today are done using a ‘blog’ format, the smarter ones make sure to get indexed in the blog search. There is much more content and nowhere near as many ads in this engine. This works especially well for finding answers to questions.
Google News: A search engine for news. There are many news sources listed, all compiled into one big blob or site for your viewing pleasure. The only issue I have with this is smaller sites aren’t often considered as reliable sources (which can be a good thing) so are not listed. Blog Search (listed above) can help if you’re not finding what you want.
Google Book Search: An interesting feature, this actually lets you see what’s inside of books. A great tool for checking to make sure you get quotes right. However, there is a limitation of what books are in this engine because of copyright laws.
Google Images: I have to point this out because I talk to SO many people who don’t know about this. On the main page simply click the image text (as seen in the image) or go to images.google.com. From here you can search and it will come up with images, so you don’t have to search through a ton of sites looking for an image you want, Google has already found them for you.
Google Directory: Categories, categories who has the categories? This is a FANTASTIC way to search, cut down your results by category. This tool makes it easy to cut down exactly what you want, where you want it. The only problem is that this doesn’t seem to be as up-to-date as the normal engine (they need to get on updating that better).
Here’s some more neat tricks you can do with Google, simply type:
- “Define: word” and you’ll get a definition of that word from multiple sources.
- A mathematical equation (such as 4+4) and Google will solve it and show you the answer.
- A conversion statement (such as 100 lbs to KG or $10 USD to CDN) and it will figure it out for you.
- “Weather City-name” This will give you a 4 day forecast (available in most places, you may need to include province/state)
- “Spell: word” to have Google check to make sure the word is real.

BlogRush Madness!
Posted By Jeff On September 16, 2007 @ 11:07 am
The past 3 days have been brutal as far as my subscribed RSS feeds are concerned, nearly all 37 of my ‘tech related’ feeds had a post in about BlogRush. This service requires you to put a widget (using javascript) somewhere on your blog. This widget displays posts from another BlogRush member’s blog. Every time that widget is loaded, you gain a ‘credit’. This credit entitles one of your posts to be displayed on somebody else’s site (within the widget).
What makes this appealing (aside from the hideously ugly widget and inability to customize it) is that they claim to display your links on blogs with similar content as well as they’ll only display similar content to your blog in your widget (like AdSense). If this works, it would be a great way to get more readers that might actually be interested in the content that I’m publishing.
The only thing I can see being a problem is repeating links. For example: Every time I go back and edit a blog post, I reload the page to make sure it looks OK (formatting-wise). I’ve had the BlogRush on my site for over 24 hours and have seen 4 of the links over 7 times already, all from the same source. That said, this is either being abused on a high scale but some users or there are next to no users at all in the “Computers and Internet” category. I’m going to go with the first answer.
I’m also noticing that there are posts about buying TVs, which would be technology, not Computers and Internet. Though this program is still in Beta, I don’t think it’s nearly qualified to have been launched to the public if they’re going to streamline everything through without checking. I do understand that they can’t manually check every site that signs up, but it would be better if they at least checked some. Or simply had a “report” feature which I’m not finding either.
I think I’m going to leave it there for two weeks or so to see how it works out. If it increases my traffic, wonderful. If not, well then I’m going to remove it. I’ll let you know two weeks from now if it’s really worth keeping or not.

So I don’t have too much to blog about ATM. I’m attempting to find some links or something interesting on BoingBoing, but it’s coming up short. My next stop is I-am-Bored. Anywhere, here is what I have so far.
Kitty Train! It’s an actual train and has kitty ears! I’m not huge cat fan (understatement of the year) but this is cool. [Link]
Some guy decided to make a collection (a nice one I might add) of a bunch of NES stuff that had come out. It’s funny how Nintendo had it all out before it was cool, now it’s coming back revamped and being the bomb digity. Anyway, I highly recommend you check it out. [Link]
And that’s all I have! What a huge amount huh? I’ll come up with something of value to blog about tomorrow. I’m also planning on giving shirtninja a new layout. It’s slowly putting itself together in my head as we speak. My set date is August 6th for having the new layout done (Blogathon) but I’m hoping to have it done up before then. Anyway, so keep an eye out in the coming days/weeks, as I know I’ll be asking advice on stuff. That is all.
Edit: I’m on the hunt to find a charity (Canadian if possible, but not needed) that is dedicated to Online safety or child safety online or something along those lines. So far I only have WiredSafety noted. So if you find anything, letting me know ASAP would be awesome. Thanks readers.
Gotta love links.

I don’t have much to say today, so I’ll give you, my loyal fan, a list of some interesting links.
So here is a story for you. Artist Jeff Tweiten decided that he was going to wait on a street corner for the opening of the next Star Wars flick. That’s normal, but guess when it’s coming out: May 19th! Yes, he was planning on waiting that long for the movie. However, he was removed from his position because of a single complaint. Check out the full article: Star Wars Squatter.
Think your soap is the best soap going? Think again. The people over at FetoSoap have created soap with razor blades in them. Yes, REAL razor blades. If you can’t wash it away, might as well just remove your skin; that’ll solve the problem. Razor Blade Soap.
“Hey Fishface, your mom wears army boots!” Ok, so maybe he doesn’t wear army boots, but he definitly is a fishface. Seriously, have a look. FishFace
Take that dirty little secret and mail that thing away. Sure you may think it’s an expression, and usually is until now. Somebody came up with the idea of creating a blog dedicated to people’s secrets. Simple create a postcard, put your secret on it and send it away. Now you can breath again. In, out, in out..Good. Postsecret
Ever use the wrong end of the towel and end up getting a weird taste in your mouth? Well, not anymore. Somebody came up with the idea of actually labling the towel for you. I’m not kidding, these people are geniuses! Got Towel?
Same thing we do every night Pinky. Try to take over the world! I’m not even going to get into explaining this. I’ll just say this guy must have very few living enemies. Not a Robot.
To finish off my list of links, let’s have a topic about how most users don’t know the difference between normal links and ads. Check it out.
As for me, I’m happy, and therefore I’m not saying anything about my life, or it will change. For should I say anything the world will collapse upon itself twicefold! Or I’d be jinxed.
MSN Spaces
Posted By Jeff On August 28, 2004 @ 1:21 am
MSN Spaces is Microsoft’s new blogging space. Currently I’ve only seen in in Japanese beta, but it’s no problem. I discovered a link and after some searching I figured out the sign up page and such for it. I’ve also figured out what most of it does as well, so I thik this will help alot of people if they’re interested. Read for simple insturctions of how to get your own. If you use these, please leave me a note and tell me, that would rule.
Want one of your own? Here’s How:
1. Go Here (you must be using IE for this sign-up).
2. It’ll ask you to sign in with your passport. Do so.
3. Fill in where you want your page to be located (duh) push the button.
4. If it shows you the address adn you’re happy with that, push teh 2nd button from the right.
5. This’ll bring you to an agreement. I have no clue what it says, but who actually reads these anyway? If you agree to all the squares, push the radio button (circle) furthest to the left, followed byt hte square button 2nd from the right.
6. First line is Blog Title (can be changed later) and 2nd is description (can also be changed later. Click the 2nd button from the right.
7. This is your layout. It can all be changed later aswell. When happy with layout and colors, push your 2nd button from the right.
8. Push your button, and you’ve made your blog.
Now, as for actually working this, I’m not totally on top of it yet, but I’ll share what I do have. Green text are links, just for that future reference.
On the left, you’ll have a profile (green link above to edit).
Under this your archive.
Followed by something.
Bottom is friends.
Furthest right is other members newly updated.
Now the middle is where all your posts go.
If you click on of the links in the middle section it will take you to what looks like a form. Click the little yellow image to create a post.
In the window, the date is on top, followed by subject/title and then category. Then there will be a text box, which should look familiar to hotmail users, it is your actual post.
Under in the grey is attachments.
The following blank line is unknown to me.
Now the three buttons in order from left to right are:
left: posting for public to see
middle: draft (save, edit and able to make public later)
right: cancel
Now when you’re actually viewing on of these, the links under the posts are (left to right) Permalink, comment and trackback.
In comments, the lines are Displayed name, email address, webpage address then actual comment. To post, push the left button.
And check out my cheapo one HERE.
And that’s it. Now have fun bugging the Japanese by taking the good addresses or something.
That is all.
